January 2025 Insolvency Stats

January Insolvency Statistics

There were 1,971 Company Insolvencies in England and Wales in January 2025. A 6.4% increase on December 2024 (1,852) and 10.7% higher than January in the previous year.

Of the 1,971 cases there were 1,546 CVLs, 269 Compulsory Liquidations, 142 Administrations and 14 Company Voluntary Arrangements. There were precisely zero Receivership Appointments or restructuring plans.

This means that CVLs accounted for around 78% of all company insolvencies, increasing by 9% from December 2024 and 14% from  January 2024, returning the trend to pre-Covid patterns.

Conversely Compulsory Liquidations in January 2025 were around 5% lower than in both December 2024 and January 2024, the latter of which is a little surprising given HMRC’s stronger line over the last twelve months and move towards issuing WUPs a little more freely.

Administrations meanwhile in January 2025 rose 10% on December 2024 and were 9% higher than in January 2024. CVAs were 13% lower in January 2025 than January 2024 and 18% lower than in December 2024.

Despite these predominant increases numbers remain low compared to historical levels.

Tim Cooper, President of R3, said,

‘Against this backdrop, I would expect to see an increase in demand for restructuring advice and support, as firms consider their options ahead of the end of the financial year, and with cost and creditor pressures unlikely to ease in the short-term.’
